Switzerland ClimateSwitzerland largely experiences a continental temperate climate, characterized by its abundant rainfall as well as the lack of any extremities as far as heat, cold and humidity are concerned. However there is significant difference in climatic conditions both seasonal and geographical. Changes are frequent and come abruptly at any given time of the year, the sun and the rain locked in a permanent struggle for supremacy. The winter season commences in December and finishes in February; the season is characterized by the frequent rainfalls it experiences while temperatures usually range between -2 to 7°C. From July to August daytime temperatures hover between 18 to 28°C, while in spring and autumn the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C, although temperatures tend to change in accordance to altitude. Spring and summer receive most of the country’s annual precipitation which averaged between 600 to 1700 mm annually. The Rhône valley in the Valais in the southwest of Switzerland is the driest part of country receiving 500-600 mm per year. The valleys Engadin in the far east also receive relatively little precipitation. The highest peaks of the Alps receive high snowfall through out the year, making Switzerland one of the most popular ski destinations on the world. |
